SAN BERNARDINO, Calif (Oct 11, 2014) A visitor strolls past vintage automobiles on display during Rendezvous Back to Route 66 car show at San Manual Stadium. The annual event, which used to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the streets of downtown over four days, remains on life support due to the efforts of Judi Penman and the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce since the elimination of the San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau as the city struggles through municipal bankruptcy. This time next weekend I will likely be immersed in reviewing my take from the 7th Annual Rendezvous Back to Route 66 car show.

Used to be the biggest event in San Bernardino every year. Four days of cars, cruising, contests, even a carnival for the kids. Candy Clark, from the cast of the 70s movie, American Grafitti, would even show up, sign autographs and sell memorabilia.

Thanks to the efforts of San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Judi Penman and her band of volunteers, the event has been kept on life support, first for a few years in the parking lot of San Manuel Stadium, where they were forced to charge admission, to its current and proper place on the streets of downtown San Bernardino.
