Some time ago I mentioned to an acquaintance, whose life seemed for them to be without meaning, that food to eat, clothes to keep us warm and a roof that didn’t leak were all anyone was entitled to, and anything else was a bonus. In our entitlement culture that didn’t sit well. According to yesterday’s editorial in The San Bernardino Sun, on the fourth Thanksgiving since the onset of the Great Recession, we should count our considerable blessings and offer thanks:

“We’re happy that our economy appears to be improving, even if the pace of improvement is agonizingly slow on this fourth Thanksgiving since the Great Recession began. The recession officially ended long ago, the experts have told us, though it still doesn’t feel that way. The Inland Empire’s unemployment rate fell from 13.5 percent to 13.3 percent last month. It’s 12.8 percent in San Bernardino County.

Those figures are way too high, of course, but better than this time last year, when the jobless rate was 14.2 percent in the Inland Empire. California, whose unemployment rate is 11.7 percent, has gained more than 192,000 jobs so far this year, 53,000 of them since August.

The state has gained almost 304,000 positions since its labor market bottomed out in 2010, according to Beacon Economics. Given that employment is a lagging indicator of overall economic health, Beacon says, “it’s clear that California is solidly in a new growth phase” and there will be no “double dip” recession here.”

Despite the seeming good news across the state, times remain tough.  If you have a job, when many others don’t, be thankful.  If you have a home, be grateful for that, with all the foreclosures that have occurred since the real estate bubble burst. Local non-profits, such as The Salvation Army, stretched as they when times have been better, are still in these trying economic times still managing to provide traditional holiday meals for the less fortunate. Despite all the world’s ills, there truly much to be thankful for.

Size Does Matter: Spartans 41, Knights 10

Teams with the largest and deepest rosters have invariably been victorious this season. Such was the case last night, as San Gorgonio Spartans, on a drizzly night at home, outnumbered and outscored the smaller Rialto Knights, 41-10. According to a pre-game search on MaxPreps, San Gorgonio fielded 70 players while Rialto fielded only 46.

On the opening kickoff, Spartans #3 running back and team captain Jaime Snowten ran the ball all the way to end zone, only to be called back to mid-field on a penalty.  On the next play, #10 quarterback  Monoe Offield hit #2 wide receiver Kevin Henderson, top, with a short pass, which Henderson hand-delivered to the end zone, putting the Spartans on the scoreboard in only two plays and in the lead to stay the balance of the game.

Soon after Rialto #5 running back Paul Cortez, bulling his way through the Spartans’ defenses, fumbled, above left.  San Gorgonio #58 defensive lineman Ryan Hunter-Simms’ recovery, above right, set up a subsequent goal. Henderson, left, later scored another goal, leaving the larger San Gorgonio team up 20-0 after only the first quarter.

Defense, Defense, Defense: Carter 16, Rialto 7

Short on offense but long on defense, Carter Lions defeated crosstown rival Rialto Knights last night to remain unbeaten in San Andreas League play, 16-7.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Lions proceeded to hold onto the ball for nearly seven minutes of the first quarter, maintaining possession by handing off mostly to running back Gaylon Maxie, above.  After eventually relinquishing control to Rialto, the Lions’ #68 DL Nathaniel Akingbemi and #52 DL Brandon Chelette, below left, teamed up to sack Rialto Knights’ #2 QB Javone Morgan in the end zone, forcing a fumble recovered by Carter for a safety, the only score by either team for three quarters of the game.

Wilmer Amina Carter, for whom Carter High School is named, above right, watched the game from the sidelines.

Onward Christian Soldiers: Knights 33, Falcons 16

The game that for much of the last decade has determined the Ambassador League title ended with Ontario Christian Knights defeating arch rival Aquinas Falcons, 33-16. After kicking off then taking over from Aquinas, Ontario Christian scored on their first possession as #25 running back Mike Salas, above, got around the Aquinas defense to set up a TD by #10 Mark Urtz on the next play. Aquinas’ #30 tight end Aaron White, right, after catching a brilliant pass from Falcons’ quarterback #2 Raymond Padilla, raced towards the end zone only to be caught short.

Aquinas then fumbled at the goal line, left, and relinquished possession to the Knights who failed to advance, then responded with a goal and extra point themselves on their next possession, tying the game at 7-7 by halftime. Ontario busted open the game in the third quarter with three additional touchdowns.  Ontario is now 2-0 in Ambassador League play and Aquinas is 1-1.
