HINKLEY, Calif. (Dec. 24, 2010) Carmela Gonzalez stands outside the gate to her North Forty Ranch. The Mojave Desert community, made famous by the movie, “Erin Brockovich,” has been hit with a toxic sequel. Hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium-6, has been found in the groundwater far beyond the original plume Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) caused, was ordered to clean up and contain following a class-action lawsuit by residents of the farming community almost 20 years ago. Gonzalez, age 44, who built her dream home here in 2003 only to learn her water is undrinkable, is spearheading the renewed effort against PG&E. (Photo by Greg Vojtko)
